Popular:

What Is Tanghulu?

Definition, origin, taste, and the questions every first-time tanghulu customer asks.

What is tanghulu?

Tanghulu is a traditional Chinese candied fruit skewer. Fresh, whole fruit is threaded onto a bamboo skewer and glazed in a thin layer of boiled sugar that hardens into a crisp, glassy shell.

The result is a dessert that snaps on the outside and bursts with fresh juice on the inside - real fruit, a whisper of sugar, and a deeply satisfying crunch.

What does tanghulu taste like?

Imagine biting through a thin, crackling shell of pure sugar into a burst of fresh, ripe fruit. The glaze is crisp and light - not thick, sticky, or heavy.

Depending on the variety, you get sweet strawberry, bright citrus, juicy grape, or tart blueberry. It is a textural experience as much as a flavor one.

Is tanghulu the same as candied fruit?

Not exactly. Traditional candied fruit is often preserved, sweetened, and processed over time. Tanghulu uses whole, fresh fruit glazed the same day with a thin sugar coating.

That makes it noticeably lighter, fresher, and more vibrant than conventional candied fruit.

Is tanghulu healthy?

Tanghulu is one of the lighter dessert options available. Each skewer is made with whole, fresh fruit and a thin sugar glaze - no heavy cream, no butter, and no baked base.

We do not call it a diet food, but compared to cupcakes, cookies, or candy, it is a noticeably fresher and lighter way to satisfy a sweet craving. Our core tanghulu is naturally vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free.

Where did tanghulu come from?

Tanghulu originated in northern China, especially Beijing, where it was traditionally made with hawthorn berries and sold by street vendors during winter festivals and markets.

At Olivia's Tanghulu, we honor that tradition while reimagining it with peak-season California fruit and a modern Bay Area presentation.

For individual orders, pickup is the primary option at T4 Millbrae and Lilikoi on Broadway in Burlingame.

For larger or custom orders, use the catering inquiry form or email hello@oliviastanghulu.com.

Can I order same-day?

For individual pickup orders, same-day ordering is available based on current availability. Check the product pages for current pickup windows.

For catering and larger orders, we recommend 3-5 business days lead time so every skewer arrives at peak freshness.

Do you ship tanghulu?

Not at this time. Tanghulu is made fresh daily and is best enjoyed the same day, so the signature crunch and fruit quality do not hold up well in extended transit.

That is why we focus on Bay Area pickup, larger-order delivery, and event catering.

How long does the crunch last?

Best enjoyed the same day. After that, the fruit naturally releases moisture and the sugar shell may soften.

For events, we time deliveries as close to serving time as possible so the texture stays at its best.

How should I store my tanghulu?

Keep tanghulu refrigerated and enjoy it the same day. Avoid humid environments which can soften the glaze faster.

For best results: refrigerate, enjoy promptly, and do not leave it in a warm car.

Our Products & Ingredients

Fruit quality, ingredients, dietary details, and what makes Olivia's Tanghulu different.

What makes Olivia's Tanghulu different?

Three things: fruit quality, glaze precision, and same-day production.

We use peak-season fruit, glaze each skewer fresh, and calibrate the sugar shell for a thin, crystal-clear snap without heaviness. The fruit is always the star.

Is tanghulu vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free?

Yes - our core tanghulu is naturally vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free. We use whole fruit and a pure sugar glaze with no dairy, no gluten-containing ingredients, and no nut products.

For specialty flavors like Milk Skin Tanghulu that contain dairy, ingredients are clearly listed on the product page.

What fruits do you use?

Our lineup rotates with the seasons and includes strawberry, mandarin orange, grape, blueberry, hawthorn when available, and premium seasonal specialties.

We source peak-season fruit for the best flavor, texture, and visual finish.

What is your best-selling flavor?

Strawberry tanghulu is our signature best-seller - glossy, bright, and balanced. It is the skewer most people start with and the one many come back for again.

If you are new to tanghulu, strawberry or the sampler are the easiest place to begin.

Catering & Events

Delivery catering, staffed service, and live glazing for Bay Area celebrations.

Do you offer tanghulu catering for corporate events in San Francisco or the Bay Area?

Yes. Corporate catering is one of our specialties. We offer delivery catering, staffed on-site service, and live glazing experiences for meetings, offsites, launches, and celebrations across San Francisco, the Peninsula, South Bay, and East Bay.

What kinds of events do you cater?

We cater corporate events, weddings, brand activations, milestone parties, birthdays, baby showers, school celebrations, and private gatherings of all sizes.

If you want a dessert that feels fresh, visual, and memorable, tanghulu is a strong fit.

What is the minimum order for catering?

Our standard catering minimum is 50 skewers. For live glazing or more complex programs, we may recommend a higher guest count depending on the format and event flow.

How far in advance should I book catering?

Earlier is always better, especially for larger events and peak dates. In most cases, 3-5 business days is the minimum lead time, and live glazing experiences may need more planning.

If you have a firm date, reach out as soon as possible.

Do you provide live glazing on-site?

Yes. We offer live tanghulu service where fruit is glazed fresh for guests on-site, creating a polished and interactive dessert experience.

It is one of our most memorable formats for weddings, launches, and high-visibility events.
